Indoles are compounds found in plants of the cruciferous vegetable family and are basic components of alkaloids, hormones, and neurotransmitters. They are credited with supportive functions in estrogen metabolism.
The cruciferous family includes many important cultivated plants such as white cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, mustard, radish, horseradish, watercress, and wasabi. Notes: Contraindicated when taking oral contraceptives. Excessive discoloration of urine, which may occur occasionally, is harmless and can be avoided with increased hydration.
