Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) is caused by the dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Improper closure of this sphincter allows gastric acid to flow back up into the esophagus, exposing it not only to stomach acid but also to several enzymes like pepsin, which is involved in protein breakdown.
These acid reflux episodes cause the unpleasant sensation commonly known as heartburn.
