What is palmitoylethanolamide (PEA)?

Palmitoylethanolamide, better known by its abbreviation PEA, is a lipid belonging to the N-acylethanolamine family. Its structure combines a fatty acid — palmitic acid — with an ethanolamine group. It is therefore neither a plant, nor a vitamin, nor a mineral, but a molecule that the human body produces itself from the phospholipids that make up cell membranes.

PEA belongs to the same biochemical family as anandamide, the leading member of the so-called endocannabinoid compounds. The literature describes it as an "endocannabinoid-like" lipid mediator: it does not bind directly to endocannabinoid receptors, but interacts notably with the nuclear receptor PPAR-alpha, which is involved in the regulation of numerous cellular processes.

PEA is also found in small amounts in everyday foods: egg yolk, soy, peanuts, corn, milk, as well as in certain vegetable oils (peanut, palm, olive). Dietary intakes nevertheless remain modest, and endogenous synthesis tends to change with age — two observations that explain the nutritional interest in this molecule in purified form.

First isolated in the 1950s, palmitoylethanolamide has since been the subject of an extensive scientific literature, with several hundred referenced publications.
