Lutein and zeaxanthin are two carotenoids: natural yellow to orange pigments produced by plants. The human body cannot make them and obtains them exclusively from the diet.
Lutein is particularly abundant in dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli and Brussels sprouts; zeaxanthin is found notably in maize, orange peppers and egg yolk.
In the eye, these two carotenoids are concentrated in the macula, the central area of the retina, to which they give its characteristic yellow colour: this is the ‘yellow spot’, or macular pigment.

Each capsule provides 10mg of lutein and 0.5mg of zeaxanthin, from 200mg of pot marigold extract (Calendula officinalis L.) standardised to 5% lutein. The dosage is flexible: 1 to 2 capsules per day, i.e. 10 to 20mg of lutein.
The formula is short: the plant extract, a stabiliser, microcrystalline cellulose, and a plant-based hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule. It is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and the product is allergen-free.
The capsules are taken after a meal: like all carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin are fat-soluble, which means they are better absorbed in the presence of dietary fat.
The 60-capsule jar covers 30 to 60 days of use, depending on the chosen dosage.
What does science say?
Among the many carotenoids provided by the diet, only lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macula, where part of the lutein is converted into meso-zeaxanthin. Together, these three pigments make up the macular pigment.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are the subject of extensive research. To date, however, no health claim has been authorised for these two carotenoids in the European Union.
