A derivative of leucine
HMB (β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate) is a metabolite derived from leucine, an essential amino acid.
Leucine is widely known to be involved in muscle protein synthesis and therefore in recovery processes. It is mainly found in lean meats, certain legumes, nuts, and spirulina.
The benefit of supplementation
In the body, about 5% of ingested leucine is metabolized into α-ketoisocaproate (KIC). Only 5% of this KIC is then converted into HMB.
Overall: about 0.2 to 0.4% of ingested leucine becomes HMB.
It is also found, in tiny amounts, in certain foods such as fish, grapefruit, avocado, and some meats. However, these dietary sources are negligible: reaching an effective dose of 3 g of HMB per day would require the unrealistic consumption of large quantities of animal protein, which contains only 8% leucine. It would take approximately 38 to 75 kg of meat to produce 3 g of endogenous HMB!
Thus, although HMB is both naturally produced by the body and present in food, the available amounts are too low to have a significant effect without supplementation.
