Guggul is the gum resin that flows from the incised bark of Commiphora mukul (Hook. ex Stocks) Engl. (synonym: Commiphora wightii (Arn.) Bhandari), a thorny shrub of the Burseraceae family, of the same genus as the myrrh tree. It grows in the arid regions of north-western India and Pakistan.

Under its Sanskrit name, ‘guggulu’, this resin holds an important place in Ayurveda, India's traditional medicine, where it has been part of many preparations for centuries.

The resin consists of an essential oil, a gum fraction and a resin fraction rich in plant steroids, the best known of which are the E- and Z-guggulsterones.

What does science say?

E- and Z-guggulsterones are plant steroids of the pregnane family, isolated from guggul resin. They are the guggul constituents most studied by scientific research.

The guggulsterone content of a guggul preparation depends on the origin of the resin and how it is prepared.

Health claims relating to plants, including guggul, are still awaiting evaluation at European level.
