Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis, now classified as Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is a mushroom from the high plateaus of the Himalayas and Tibet, where it grows above 3000 metres. In the wild, it develops on caterpillars, hence its nickname of ‘caterpillar fungus’. Its scarcity long made it a precious product, reserved for the elites of imperial China.

To preserve the resource and ensure consistent quality, the cordyceps used in food supplements today is grown by fermentation, as mycelium, without the use of caterpillars.

Cordyceps contains polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, nucleosides such as adenosine, sterols such as ergosterol, and D-mannitol, long known as ‘cordycepic acid’.

Why choose Therascience Mushroomssentiel CordycepsPrime?

CordycepsPrime™ is a cordyceps mycelium extract from the CS-4 strain, obtained by fermentation and from organic farming, developed by the American company NuLiv Science. According to Laboratoire Therascience, the identity of the strain is verified by DNA testing.

The extract is standardised to 15% polysaccharides, 8% cordycepic acid and 0.28% adenosine, i.e. 150mg, 80mg and 2.8mg for 2 capsules. Its extraction ratio is 50:1, meaning that 1g of extract corresponds to 50g of mushroom powder.

The mycelium is dried with hot air and the extract is obtained without solvents and without growth substrate. Each batch of raw materials is tested in line with good manufacturing practice (GMP), in particular by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The two bacterial strains are individually microencapsulated (Probio-Protect® technology) and placed in gastro-resistant plant-based capsules, designed to release their contents in the intestine rather than in the stomach.

The formula contains no colourings, artificial flavourings, preservatives, titanium dioxide or colloidal silica. It contains no gluten- or lactose-based ingredients, is suitable for vegans and is made in France.

At 1 to 2 capsules a day, the 60-capsule bottle covers 30 to 60 days of use.

What does science say?

‘Cordycepic acid’, long considered a compound specific to cordyceps, has been identified as D-mannitol, a polyol naturally found in many mushrooms; the nutritional table states this in brackets.

Adenosine is a nucleoside, a molecule related to the building blocks of DNA and RNA. Its content serves as a marker to check the quality of cordyceps extracts. Cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine), a closely related nucleoside often associated with cordyceps, was first isolated from a related species, Cordyceps militaris.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, called Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG since the reclassification of lactobacilli in 2020, was isolated in 1983; its initials refer to its discoverers, Sherwood Gorbach and Barry Goldin. Bifidobacterium animalissubsp. lactis BS01 belongs to the bifidobacteria, a genus of bacteria naturally present in the intestine.

To date, no health claim is authorised in the European Union for cordyceps or for these bacterial strains.
