Benefits
Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is a water-soluble vitamin that the body stores only in small amounts, so it needs to be supplied regularly through the diet. In its active form, thiamine pyrophosphate, it acts as a coenzyme for several key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism, at the heart of cellular energy production.
Benfotiamine is a thiamine derivative developed in Japan in the late 1950s. Its particular structure gives it higher bioavailability than the water-soluble thiamine salts conventionally used.
The contributions of vitamin B1 are recognised by EU legislation: thiamine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function and to the normal function of the heart (authorised claims, Regulation (EU) No 432/2012). With 150mg of benfotiamine per capsule, the product far exceeds the 15% nutrient reference value threshold required for the use of these claims.
Why choose Nova Vitae Benfotiamine?
Nova Vitae is a Dutch brand of orthomolecular food supplements that has been marketing its own formulas since 1978. Each capsule provides 150mg of benfotiamine: a high dosage, with a flexible intake of one to two capsules per day.
The formulation is deliberately minimal: benfotiamine is combined with 12mg of L-leucine, an amino acid frequently used in formulation as a flow agent, in a plant cellulose capsule. The formula contains no magnesium stearate.
The product is non-GMO, gluten-free and soy-free, and suitable for vegetarians. The 60-capsule bottle covers one to two months of use, depending on the chosen dosage.
What does science say?
Thiamine was the first B vitamin to be identified, hence its name vitamin B1; its name also refers to the sulfur atom (from the Greek “theîon”) in its structure. Its nutrient reference value is set at 1.1mg per day at European level.
Benfotiamine (S-benzoylthiamine O-monophosphate) is related to the allithiamines — thiamine derivatives identified in garlic (Allium sativum L.) in the early 1950s — but differs from them chemically: it is an S-acyl derivative (thioester), not a disulfide. After ingestion, it is dephosphorylated in the intestine to S-benzoylthiamine, a lipid-soluble intermediate that readily crosses cell membranes before being converted back into thiamine, mainly in red blood cells and the liver.
Pharmacokinetic studies have shown that this absorption pathway leads to markedly higher blood thiamine levels than conventional water-soluble salts.
Note: Food supplements should not replace a balanced and varied diet.
