Astaxanthin is a red pigment belonging to the carotenoid family, and more precisely to the xanthophyll group. It is synthesised by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, its most concentrated natural source, and is subsequently found in certain marine organisms (salmon, krill, shrimp) that feed on this alga. A fat-soluble molecule, astaxanthin is the subject of extensive scientific literature and attracts growing nutritional interest.

Unlike some carotenoids, astaxanthin is not converted into vitamin A (retinol) in the body, which rules out any accumulation risk linked to excess retinol. Its intake from an ordinary diet nevertheless remains very limited, as natural marine sources contain only small amounts — which explains the use of a concentrated form derived from microalgae.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that the human body can neither synthesise nor store for long, and which must therefore be supplied daily through the diet. It is involved in numerous physiological functions and here complements the astaxanthin intake.

At the recommended dose of 2 capsules per day, the intake reaches 8 mg of pure astaxanthin from the alga Haematococcus pluvialis, together with 1000 mg of vitamin C — exactly the maximum daily amount of astaxanthin authorised in the European Union for this ingredient.

The capsule is a 100 % plant-based shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), with no animal gelatin: the formula is therefore suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets. The astaxanthin comes from Haematococcus pluvialis, regarded as the reference natural source for this pigment.

The formula is deliberately minimalist — two actives and a plant-based shell, with no added colorants, flavors or synthetic preservatives. As astaxanthin is fat-soluble, taking it during a meal supports its absorption.

At European Union level, no specific health claim is currently authorised for astaxanthin: it is described here solely by its nature as a carotenoid antioxidant. The product’s health claims rest on vitamin C, for which the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved the following properties:

·      Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system;

·      Vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism;

·      Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue;

·      Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin.
